The role of Jasmine Platt in this masterfully written play Type 2 - A Tragic Comedy, by Jason Gale, is by far the most challenging role I have seen in a long time.
Every emotion is pulled on, portrayed, and experience from from the actor's and audience's perspective.
The two trickiest components to want to be able to master are the comedic elements and the very deep, dark emotional transformations. I feel privileged to be the first artist to have had this honour.
The role also requires a loving hand to hold the heart of the author in them...for this is the true beauty and the honesty of the performance by the actor. Knowing and understanding where the powerful words on the page came from will be the secret to an honest performance.
In the play we have a minimalist set so the show can travel very easily. As part of the meager set decoration is a plaque that reads "Dying is Easy....Comedy is Hard". It is so fitting for our show. I got it at an auction for Theatre Intrigue and Riverfront Theatre last year. It was such a fun evening. When the plaque went up for bidding we laughingly and competitively got the price up to $46...that was too high for me as my wallet was tapped out. I ended up buying a different plaque and convinced the bartender (who had outbid me on the one I wanted) that we should trade....and he kindly did! Good times and Good people!
Jason, the author of Type 2 - A Tragic Comedy hopes to see this show touring internationally with many casts and being performed in many languages because of the tremendous awareness the show is creating about bipolar disorder. The show is also acting as a catalyst for healing, sharing, caring and understanding....it is a widly beautiful experience on our end.
